The water at Zahara de los Atunes is usually calm and wonderful for swimming, but being on the Atlantic there can also be good waves which can be enjoyed from the village, the water's edge or in kayaks or on surfboards.
The beach at Zahara is not usually very crowded as there is very little public parking nearby and often the only visitors are the few local fishermen who surf from a long distance away.
The white sand is also ideal for building sandcastles, boats, etc., a favourite game for children.
In spring, the beach becomes a sea of colour for a few weeks, as an abundance of brightly coloured wildflowers carpet the sand.
We recommend a walk along the beach and then up the hills to the Roman ruins of Bolonia. It is wonderful at all times of the year, but it is especially so in spring because of the explosion of colour of the flowers.
Most days from the beach you can see Tangier clearly and, at night, the individual lights of the houses in Tangier.
You can also make out the Tif mountain range in North Africa on a clear day with no haze
